BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Holton and Santa Fe Trail left the Class 4A-1A girls wrestling regional Saturday with six qualifiers for the state tournament.
Yet, it was Holton who earned the regional championship at Baldwin High. The Wildcats scored 125 team points to beat SFT by 18 points for the title.
Leading the way for Holton was a pair of individual champions. Piper Robinson won all three of her matches in the 115-pound bracket. She escaped the semifinal with a 6-5 decision before edging out the championship, 9-8, over Eudora’s Kyleigh Musick.
At 143 pounds, Sadie Walker finished 4-0 with four falls. Walker pinned her first two opponents in less than a minute. In the finals, she pinned Wellsville’s Lindsay Witt near the end of the second period to win the 143 bracket.
Also qualifying for Holton was Macey Gross (2nd, 120), Gracie Gallagher (3rd, 132), Madeline Montgomery (2nd, 191) and Karoline Tannahill (4th, 235).
Santa Fe Trail was led by one champion and two second-place finishes. Quincy Koger pinned all three of her opponents in the 191-pound bracket. Her quickest pin was in the finals, and she pinned Montgomery in 1 minute and 8 seconds.
Hailee Crosland finished 3-1 at 138 pounds en route to placing second. Sierra Dempsey received a first-round bye, won her semifinal match by a 6-4 decision and lost in the finals at 235. The other SFT state qualifiers were Madison Adkins (3rd, 115), Savana Hook (4th, 120) and Kilee Waters (3rd, 155).
Tournament host Baldwin will be sending five wrestlers to state, but the Bulldogs didn’t have any wrestlers in the finals. Baldwin’s state qualifiers are Brianna Mitchell (3rd, 109), Allee Darnell (3rd, 120), Kaitlin Base (4th, 170), Elee Pittman (3rd, 191) and Madi Hargett (3rd, 235).
Eudora finished fifth as a team at the regional. The Cardinals sent four wrestlers to state, led by Musick at 115 pounds. Musick placed second after winning two matches by fall and losing the title match by a 9-8 decision.
The other Eudora wrestlers headed to next week’s state tournament are Maddy Arnold (4th, 126), Phoebe Fletcher (4th, 132) and Madison Karten (4th, 155).
Two spots behind Eudora in the team standings was Tonganoxie. The Chieftains also sent four to state. Taylor Lux was the top Chieftain at the tournament. Lux pinned all three of her opponents – two in the first round – to win the 109-pound championship.
Also headed to state for Tonganoxie are Madison Daniels (3rd, 101), Grace Stean (2nd, 170) and Ana Tochtrop (4th, 191).
